Many asphalted roads in Ho Chi Minh City center have been improved and repaired, while the quality of some roads in the suburbs of the city have become seriously damaged, with few repairs done for many years. Work to renovate nine bridges along Highway 1A (Can Tho - Ca Mau section) is running behind schedule, causing traffic pileups during rush hour, holding up office- and school-goers.

The Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) broke the ground of an US$80 million bio-ethanol plant in Dung Quat Economic Zone, central Quang Ngai province on Sept. 6.
Construction of the plant, the largest of its kind in the central region, will last for 18 months.
Using cassava as raw material, the plant has a designed capacity of 100,000 cubic meter of ethanol per year.

Gold prices touched a record high of VND21.86 million a tael (1.2 ounces) in Vietnam on September 7 as global prices opened the week with a slight correction and are expected to top $1,000 an ounce soon due to speculation.
